Celebrating Catholic Schools Week 2024 in St. Mary’s, Altinure.

25th Jan 2024

We have had a lovely week in school celebrating ‘Catholic Schools Week 2024’.  The theme was ‘Catholic Schools - Communities of Service’.  We began with the opening Mass in St. Eugene’s Cathedral Derry. Our Primary 1/2 children sang beautiful songs and painted amazing pictures of their grandparents. During a class discussion, Primary 2 and 3 children talked about how Jesus is a great friend who listens, teaches about God and helps others in need. The children then made love hearts with images and words representing friendship for our class display. Primary 4 boys and girls enjoyed lots of activities together, especially how to be wonderful friends. We created a ‘new’ friend for the class and filled it with ideas of how we can accompany each other, encourage, share and help each other to grow! We appreciated God’s amazing creation, given to us to take care of.  Thank you to our Fr. Micheál and Charlotte, whose support and help in our preparations for our First Confession and First Holy Communion is appreciated so much. Primary 5 watched a video about Pope Francis' letter on caring for our common home. We then designed posters to encourage ourselves and other pupils in our school to care more about protecting the world in which we live. We also talked about vocations and how God has a special plan for each one of us. In Key Stage 2, pupils also discussed environmental issues and P7 brainstormed the many ways we can serve our community to make it a better place, such as planting trees and picking up litter.

What a wonderful week! Well done everyone!
